Osteoarthritis of the shoulder joint is accompanied by swelling, severe shoulder pain and limited range of motion. The causes and symptoms of the disease, existing treatment methods and ways to help at home will be discussed later in the article.

What is shoulder osteoarthritis
The shoulder joint is quite complex in structure and the most mobile of all, providing the human body with the fullest range of motion. The shoulder joint capsule can stretch very strongly, thanks to which a person can raise his arm vertically and perform rotational movements with it.This activity weakens the ligaments and, due to the strong curvature of the tendons, slight ischemia is often observed.
It is the lack of nutrition of the joint tissue that constitutes the main threat of its destruction and gives impetus to the development of pathology.
The disease, which is mainly expressed in the degeneration of the tissues of the shoulder joint, is called osteoarthritis of the shoulder joint or shoulder osteoarthritis. The biomechanics of the shoulder is based on the impeccable functioning of all components: normal nerve conduction, good blood circulation, impeccable anatomical structure.Violation of any of these conditions invariably leads to the fact that the internal tissues begin to deform, causing discomfort, limitation of movements and pain.
Osteoarthritis (or osteoarthritis) is above all a disease not of an inflammatory nature, but of a degenerative nature. It is associated with ischemic processes in the surrounding tissues caused by various reasons.
As a result, the nutrition of the joint is disrupted, leading to thinning of the thin, elastic layer of hyaline cartilage covering the head of the bone.Having become less elastic and thinner, hyaline cartilage makes normal movements difficult, causing a narrowing of the joint space.
This phenomenon forces the body to act and bone spurs called osteophytes form along the edges of the joint. It is the osteophytes, with their sharp edges, which injure the muscles and ligaments, causing chronic low-grade inflammation.
The main danger of osteoarthritis is that a slight limitation in the mobility of the arm invariably leads to a reduction in the range of motion.
Without moving, the shoulder begins to suffer from the accumulation of salts in the tissues surrounding the joint and the deterioration of nutrition of the joint tissues.Over time, this results in the formation of joint contractures - a limitation of movement or complete loss of shoulder mobility and disability for the patient.
Causes of shoulder osteoarthritis
The only cause of shoulder osteoarthritis is deep ischemia, that is, a sudden or progressive deterioration of the blood supply to certain areas of tissue and a lack of nutrition of the joint. But this reason is caused by factors that may be present in the anamnesis, individually or simultaneously:
- Shoulder injuries. These can be either obvious injuries resulting from a car accident or fall, or hidden tears of muscles and ligaments sustained during sports training or hard work.Any joint injury always has the capacity to remember, as the affected areas do not return to their full size and their conductivity is invariably impaired. The body can successfully cope with it for several years or even decades until aging begins.
- Age-related changes in the body.
- Infectious attacks causing arthritis.
- Metabolic and hormonal disorders, also often associated with age.
- Hereditary or genetic predisposition.
Stages and symptoms of osteoarthritis of the shoulder joint
The disease goes through several stages in its development.Since osteoarthritis is a chronic disease that progresses quite slowly, most patients ignore the first stage, during which joint deformation can be most effectively combated.
- Symptoms of the first stage. For the first time, the patient may feel some discomfort when moving his hand, already when the hyaline cartilage becomes thin.A sharp swing or jerk is not accompanied by pain, this is explained by the fact that there are no nerve endings in the cartilage and its destruction does not lead to pain. But sometimes, in the evening or towards the end of a sports session, shoulder pain starts to bother me.We often don't pay attention to it and attribute it to muscle pain or neuralgia. But the disease began almost asymptomatically, and if immediate measures are not taken, it enters the second stage.
- Symptoms of the second stage. If the patient feels pain when moving the arm, accompanied by a clearly audible click, this means that osteophytes have formed in the joint. From this point on, the shoulder is constantly injured by the sharp edges of the bony growths, causing inflammation of the surrounding tissues. This results in morning stiffness, which only disappears after the joint develops, or in pain during usual physical activity or in nighttime fatigue.
A person's well-being deteriorates, because a chronic source of inflammation in the body affects the general condition. At night, in humid weather and out of season, the joint may be more painful.
The patient sharply limits the volume and range of movements of the arm, cannot raise it more than ninety degrees, both in the frontal and lateral plane. This leads to muscle atrophy and a significant deterioration in the nutrition of joint tissues.
- Symptoms of the third stage.Usually, if a patient visits the doctor in the third stage of the disease, he is virtually unable to move his arm.The arm does not rise, does not move to the side, the joint swells and enlarges. The muscles atrophy, and the pain syndrome is so intense that when you try to raise your hand, tremors appear in your fingers. In most cases, there are contractures in the shoulder joint, “frozen shoulder” syndrome.
Methods for treating shoulder osteoarthritis
In fact, it is impossible to cure osteoarthritis, and even more so, it is impossible to do it at home. This disease is so dependent on many internal and external factors that it is almost never the root cause.
But the good news for patients in the first and second stages of the disease is that the development of osteoarthritis can be stopped. That is why doctors insist on early diagnosis of the disease and the start of treatment of osteoarthritis of the shoulder, when the joint tissue is only partially destroyed, there are no osteophytes and one can try to restore normal nutrition to the joint.
Conservative therapy
Treatment of osteoarthritis always pursues two goals: to eliminate pain and, if possible, to restore the supply of the joint with substances necessary for its normal functioning.

- The supply of nutrients to the tissues depends on what the patient eats. The diet for osteoarthritis should exclude salt and alcohol. Also undesirable are meat products and vegetables containing purine bases, which increase the level of uric acid in the body.Dairy and steamed vegetable dishes are recommended.
- Binding drugs containing glucosamine and chondroitin, as well as collagen, which nourish joint tissues. And daily consumption of ordinary gelatin in the form of jelly helps to enrich the menu with animal collagen.
- Local application of various warming, anti-inflammatory and chondroitin-containing ointments and balms activates blood circulation in the tissues surrounding the joint.
- If the pain syndrome is not severe, the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs is not recommended. If hand movements are accompanied by severe pain, NSAIDs can relieve pain and reduce inflammation. These medications will help reduce pain.
- If the shoulder swells and an inflammatory process begins there, an ointment compress applied at night or rubbing with gels has an excellent effect.
- Therapeutic exercises are an essential part of the successful treatment of shoulder osteoarthritis. But it is not recommended to overload the joint, since poorly distributed forces can lead to rapid destruction of hyaline cartilage.
Therapeutic exercises for shoulder osteoarthritis and rules for its implementation
Special exercises will help develop the joint and give it mobility. You can do gymnastics yourself at home. The main rules when performing exercises should be:
- regularity, that is, you must perform exercises daily for at least 15 minutes;
- perform exercises smoothly and without much effort.This is necessary so as not to further damage the joint structures;
- obtain moral pleasure during physical activity, which will help to normalize the emotional state of the patient.
Physiotherapy exercises are recommended in which hand movements do not cause pain. They are performed slowly, forcing the ligaments and muscles to gradually warm up and stretch.

- We offer the simplest and most useful exercises for shoulder osteoarthritis:
- Sitting in a chair, place your hands on your knees.Make circular movements with your shoulders: 5 times forward, then 5 times backward.
- Raise your arms straight up, pulling your shoulders and shoulder blades as high behind them as possible.Hold the position for a few seconds, then lower.Repeat 5 to 7 times.
- Extend your arms straight, palms down, out to the sides.Bend your hands at the wrist joints, fingers should point upwards.Make circular movements with your shoulders: 5 times forward, then 5 times backward.
- Raise your bent arms above your head, with the fingers of one on the elbows of the opposite hand.Gently move your arms back until you feel a stretch in the shoulder joint.Perform the exercise 5-7 times.
- Place the palms of both hands behind your head with the backs of your hands, fingers pointing down.Move your hands so that your palms run down your back to the area between your shoulder blades.Repeat the exercise 5 to 7 times.
- Place your left hand on the elbow of your right, move your right hand as far behind your left shoulder as possible until you feel a stretch at the shoulder joint.Perform the exercise 5-7 times.Switch hands and repeat the exercise for the other hand.
In the treatment of osteoarthritis of the shoulder joint, the following are recognized as effective: manual therapy, physiotherapy and sanatorium treatment. The use of traditional medicine methods is also considered justified.
Traditional methods of treatment and help at home
The main folk remedy for the treatment of osteoarthritis of the shoulder joint is herbal medicine, which allows the use of dry herbs and plant decoctions for compresses, the preparation of ointments and frictions at home to normalize metabolism and restore nutrition to the joint in order to reduce pain.
- Ointment.Take 10 grams of dry leaves of hops, sweet clover, St. John's wort.Carefully grind the herbs and grind them together, add petroleum jelly and mix all the ingredients thoroughly.Apply the prepared ointment to the shoulder area. This will help reduce pain and inflammation in the joint.
- Friction.Pour five parts vodka or alcohol into one part crushed wild rosemary flowers. Then you need to infuse the medicine in a warm, dark place for 24 hours. The tincture is used externally to rub the affected joints.
- Decoction.Pour corn silk (2 tablespoons) into two glasses of water, boil for 10 minutes, filter and drink one tablespoon four times a day.
- Compress. For the compress, you need to prepare 30 grams of dry oatmeal in two glasses of water.Apply the prepared mixture to the sore shoulder for 30 minutes.
Alternative treatment for shoulder osteoarthritis
- Manual techniques - massages, manual therapy sessions, osteopathy - help relieve muscle blockages, tensions and spasms, freeing the blood vessels and nerves leading to the joint.
- Physiotherapy, especially shock wave therapy, balneotherapy, mud therapy and other methods, are not recommended during an exacerbation, that is, when there is an active inflammatory process in the joint.
- Remission is an excellent reason to undergo sanatorium treatment, after which lasting improvement is observed.
Surgical treatment of shoulder osteoarthritis

If severe pain prevents the patient from leading a normal life, the doctor may recommend surgery.
Most often, prostheses are made, that is, the destroyed joint is replaced with an endoprosthesis. If possible, they perform a partial joint replacement, changing only part of the shoulder joint.
Surgery is used in rare cases, because any surgical intervention, especially related to the installation of an intra-articular prosthesis, can lead to complications and a long recovery period.
Osteoarthritis of the shoulder joint is an insidious and dangerous disease in which a person's motor activity is impaired and quite severe pain is noted.
It is important to treat this disease quickly at the first minor symptoms, in order to avoid further destruction of the joint.
The patient should remember that the success of osteoarthritis treatment largely depends on his efforts and activity, and not on medications.
